The invasion was postponed by a day because of storms, and the final decision to go hinged on a forecast of a brief window of calmer weather.
How to estimate it
Count the units. The landing used five beaches, and each received a reinforced infantry division with tanks, engineers and follow-up waves, about 25,000 men by midnight: 5 × 25,000 = 125,000. Three airborne divisions dropped inland by parachute and glider, about 8,000 men each: 24,000. 125,000 + 24,000 = 149,000. The usual figure is about 156,000 troops.
