The bridges and windows drawn on euro notes were deliberately invented so that no country would be favoured. A Dutch town later built the fictional bridges for real.
How to estimate it
Work from the value of cash, not from wallets. In most economies, cash in circulation is worth about 10 percent of annual GDP, because much of it is hoarded or held abroad. The euro area's GDP is about 15 trillion euros, so 1.5 trillion in notes. The average note is worth about 50 euros: 1.5 trillion / 50 = 30 billion. The ECB reports about 30 billion banknotes.
